Recover from an interrupted scan

Retain partial input as incomplete, inspect the provisional result and capture a complete replacement.

For operators

Read these instructions on any device. Watch or practise a chapter on a desktop or laptop, with a desktop or mobile application layout. Demonstrations use sample data and simulated scanners.

Recover from an interrupted scan

  1. Start capture in the focused box

Start capture in the focused box.

Start capture explicitly. Only this box collects keyboard input. These keystrokes are simulated; the course does not measure a physical scanner.

  2. Enter only part of the value

Enter only part of the value.

This input is unfinished. Moving focus must retain it as an incomplete observation instead of treating it as a successful scan.

  3. Move focus away from capture

    Move focus away from capture.

Focus loss pauses collection and retains the partial text. Do not use an incomplete record as production confirmation.

  4. Inspect a provisional comparison

    Inspect a provisional comparison.

Even when the text happens to agree, an incomplete capture has only a provisional result. Start again before accepting a check.

  5. Start capture in the focused box

Start capture in the focused box.

Start capture explicitly. Only this box collects keyboard input. These keystrokes are simulated; the course does not measure a physical scanner.

  6. Capture the complete replacement value

    Capture the complete replacement value.

Restarting capture focuses the box. This complete value replaces the partial observation for comparison; the incomplete history remains visible.

  7. Confirm the recovered exact value

    Confirm the recovered exact value.

Check against the complete known value. A successful recovery does not delete the incomplete observation or its reason.
